Saturn V Rocket

Apollo 11 was the first crewed mission to successfully land humans on the Moon and return them safely to Earth. Launched on July 16, 1969, from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the mission fulfilled President John F. Kennedy's 1961 goal of landing humans on the Moon before the end of the decade.
The mission was a culmination of the Space Race between the United States and Soviet Union, representing one of humanity's greatest technological achievements. The Apollo program involved over 400,000 people and cost approximately $25 billion (over $150 billion in today's money).

The Crew
Neil Armstrong
Mission Commander
Former test pilot and naval aviator who became the first person to walk on the Moon. Armstrong's calm demeanor and piloting skills were crucial during the lunar landing when he manually piloted the Eagle to avoid a boulder field.
Buzz Aldrin
Lunar Module Pilot
MIT-educated astronaut with a doctorate in astronautics. Aldrin was the second person to walk on the Moon and conducted scientific experiments during the lunar surface operations.
Michael Collins
Command Module Pilot
Remained in lunar orbit aboard Columbia while Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the surface. Collins was responsible for the safe return of the crew and has been called "the loneliest man in the universe."
Mission Timeline
Launch
Apollo 11 launches from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39A. The Saturn V rocket successfully propels the spacecraft toward the Moon.
Lunar Orbit
The spacecraft enters lunar orbit after a three-day journey through space.
Lunar Landing
The Eagle lunar module lands in the Sea of Tranquility with only 17 seconds of fuel remaining. Armstrong's famous words are heard worldwide.
First Steps
Neil Armstrong becomes the first human to step onto the lunar surface, followed by Buzz Aldrin 19 minutes later.
Lunar Ascent
After 21.5 hours on the lunar surface, the Eagle's ascent stage launches to rejoin Collins in the command module.
Safe Return
The crew splashes down safely in the Pacific Ocean, completing humanity's first lunar landing mission.
